Where you can play sweepstakes casinos
Sweepstakes casinos are open to adults in thirty-seven states today. Thirteen have shut them down since 2025 and Oklahoma follows on November 1, 2026. This page keeps the current list and explains what happens at the state line.

Most of these are recent laws. Casinos geofence at login, so an account opened elsewhere will stop working the moment you connect from one of these states.

Everywhere else
Outside the fourteen states above, sweepstakes play is open to adults who meet the casino’s age rule. Most casinos set 18; Stake.us and High 5 Casino set 21 everywhere, and a few states set 21 for all casinos. The age rule is shown at the top of each review on this site.
Availability is decided casino by casino rather than by a central register, and two casinos can read the same state differently. Where one casino refuses your state and another accepts it, both are usually acting on legal advice about an unclear statute. It is worth trying a second casino before concluding your state is closed.
Prizes are taxable income. Casinos issue a 1099 form above the federal reporting threshold, and state treatment varies. We are not tax advisers; a large prize is worth a conversation with one.
If you travel, your location is checked at login, not just at registration. Playing from a closed state on a trip can freeze an account with a pending redemption inside it.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
For most of the last decade only Washington and Idaho were firmly closed, with Michigan, Nevada and Montana excluded by some casinos and not others. That changed quickly. Nevada, Montana and Connecticut passed dedicated laws that took effect in autumn 2025. New Jersey and New York followed, California’s AB 831 took effect on January 1, 2026, and Indiana, Maine, Tennessee and Louisiana enacted bans during the 2026 sessions. Oklahoma’s law takes effect on November 1, 2026.
Several other states debated bills in 2026 that did not pass, Maryland among them. We review this page monthly and the date at the top tells you when it was last checked. If your state is considering a bill, the casinos themselves will usually email registered players before any closure.
Four things to get right at sign-up
- Use your real address
Registration will accept almost anything. Verification will not, and verification happens exactly when you have a prize waiting.
- Check the age rule
Eighteen at most casinos, twenty-one at some, and twenty-one for everyone in a few states.
- Expect a location check at login
Casinos use your connection and device to confirm you are in an open state every time you sign in.
- Keep your details consistent
The name on your account, your ID and your bank account must match for a redemption to clear.
